Come march with the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar during the 20th annual Napa Valley AIDS Walk. This year's event takes place on Saturday, October 29th and starts at Veterans Park in downtown Napa. Proceeds will benefit HIV/AIDS prevention services provided by Planned Parenthood.

Four great groups! Two wonderful venues! One fabulous evening!

Join the crowd on Saturday evening, September 10, 2011 (that's 9-10-11) when the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar, Sonoma GayDar, Solano-Yolo Gay Men's Alliance (SYGMA) and the Vallejo Gay Network come together for what the Napa troops would call "Mission: Mega Meet-up and Maneuvers"

From 5:30 to 8:30 pm, we'll drop in on the folks at Valley Gate Vineyards (1 Kirkland Ranch Road - just off Jamieson Canyon Road in Napa) for wine tasting and general "mixing" and merriment. Valley Gate will have wines available for purchase by the glass or by the bottle. Their horseshoe pit and croquet set will be available for a little friendly competition.

Following wine tasting, we'll head over to BarBersQ (3900 D Bel Aire Plaza, Napa) for a little al fresco dining on their patio. The Q's fabulous full menu will be available until 9:30 pm. Then, starting at 9:30 they'll roll-out a special late-night dining menu just for us consisting of lots of fun stuff to share, including:

Malaysian Independence Day Mission

It has land borders with Thailand, Indonesia and Brunei and is linked to Singapore by a narrow causeway. It also has maritime boundaries with Vietnam and the Philippines.
It's official language is Bahasa Malaysia and its currency is called the Ringgit (worth about 34 cents)
The largest city is Kuala Lumpur
It has a population of about 28 million
On August 31, 2011 Malaysians will celebrate the 55th anniversary of independence from the United Kingdom

So, what kind of food is served in Malaysia? Well, we're about to find out!

Join the troops of the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar (as well as our friends from the Vallejo Gay Network) when we invade Asian Wok & Grill (110 West American Canyon Road, American Canyon) on Saturday, August 27 from 1 to 3 pm for a Malaysian Independence Day lunch celebration.

The event will be hosted by Chef Eddie Chong - a Malaysian ex-pat and his partner Gregg Liebgold. They're working with the owners of Asian Wok and Grill to put on a spread worthy of celebration. Here's the planned menu:

Rojak Tanjong (Mixed vegetable and fruit salad with Malaysian sweet soy dressing)
Hainanese Crispy Chicken with spice salt
Melaka Chicken Rice (Chef Eddie says "you will be surprised"!)

Napa IPA Day Celebration to Benefit V.O.I.C.E.S.

On Thursday August 4th, thousands of craft beer lovers across the globe and across the social media sphere will raise pints in a collective toast to one of craft beer's most iconic styles, the India Pale Ale, during International #IPADay 2011.

And don't think that just because we're in the middle of wine country that we'd miss out on the opportunity to toast with hops instead of grapes! What is being billed as "the largest IPA Day celebration in Northern California (and quite possibly the whole west coast)" will take place at the Marriott Napa Valley Hotel & Spa (3425 Solano Avenue, Napa) on August 4 from 5 to 8 pm.

Tickets are just $10 per person. For that sawbuck you'll enjoy a myriad of delicious IPAs from over 10 local craft breweries.

Pre and Post Porchfest Functions

It's out of the garage and onto the porch! It's Napa Porchfest 2011!

What is Napa Porchfest? A different group of Napa musicians will be performing on the front porches of homes throughout Downtown neighborhoods on the same day (Sunday, July 31) at the same time (2 to 5 pm). You pick and choose the ones you want to go hear. You "bike, drive, walk, skip, roller skate, skate board, pedibike or fly from porch to porch much like you would cruise from studio to studio during the Open Studio events". Bring beach chairs and coolers . . . and be prepared for a great afternoon of music from Alta Heights to the alphabet streets!

Here's the plan - we'll meet at Alexis Baking Company (1517 Third Street, Napa) for a delicious brunch (including Alexis' famous Huevos Rancheros and baked goods) starting at 12:30 pm. While there we'll compare notes and create our mission plan. Some of us may pick one artist and head toward that porch around 1:45. Others may want to experience a potpourri of musical magic and plan a route to follow during the three hour event.

At the conclusion of Porchfest at 5 pm we'll head over to Carpe Diem Wine Bar (1001 Second Street, Napa) to compare notes, share pictures/videos and enjoy Carpe Diem's outstanding food and beverages (we'll even be there in time for Happy Hour!)

This time Ewan is paired with Christopher Plummer and Melanie Laurent in "Beginners". The comedy/drama by Mike Mills tells the story of a young man who is rocked by two announcements from his elderly father: that he has terminal cancer, and that he has a young male lover.

This is the fabulous Mr. Ted Allen.

You've probably seen him most recently on television shows like "Chopped", "The Best Thing I Ever Ate", "Top Chef" and "Iron Chef America". He's also a best-selling cookbook author ("The Foods You Want To Eat - 100 Smart, Simple Recipes").

Well, we all got to know him as the Food and Wine Connoisseur on "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy".

Fundraiser for World Vets in Japan

Sometimes we forget about the fur-babies.

A group of folks here in Napa is sponsoring a fundraiser to support the work of World Vets in Japan. World Vets is a "non-governmental organization providing veterinary aid around the globe in collaboration with animal advocacy groups, foreign governments, US and foreign military groups and veterinary professionals abroad." Right now they're "on-the-ground" in Sendai - an area affected by the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunami working with a large coalition of Japanese animal welfare groups. They were deployed just 4 days after the horrific tsunami as a first responder to the animals of the region.

The fundraiser will take place Sunday, April 10 from 2 - 8 pm at Billco's Billiards (1234 Third Street, Napa). "Oh, for Pet's Sake" will feature:

The Napa Guerilla Gay Bar is starting a project called "It Gets Better - Napa Valley". Our aim is to put a copy of "It Gets Better: Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying, and Creating a Life Worth Living" in every high school library in the Napa Valley. In fact, we want to place at least one copy on the shelves for every 150 students. With 7,500 kids attending the Valley' high schools that means we'll need at least 50 copies.

Japanese Relief Fundraiser at Oxbow - Sunday, March 20

The devastation in Japan due to the earthquake, tsunami and on-going nuclear crisis is horrific. The images on television and on-line are heartbreaking.

Our friends at the Napa Valley Unity League are working with the fine merchants and purveyors at the Oxbow Public Market (610 & 644 First Street in Napa) to help raise funds to assist with the Japanese relief efforts.

So, here's the mission troops - come to the Oxbow Public Market on Sunday, March 20 between 3 and 7 pm. Here's what will be happening:

a number of fine Oxbow merchants will be donating a portion of their proceeds to the American Red Cross on behalf of Japanese relief efforts. Signs will be posted to let you know which merchants are participating.

Band Geeks Unite!

Military organizations have always depended upon music. "Reveille" is played on the bugle every morning while "Taps" is played every evening. Marches would lead forces into battle and full bands would help troops celebrate victories or comfort them in defeat.

For many of us, including your mission commander (he played bass clarinet in the junior high school band), music played a huge part in our growing up. We carried our trumpet or trombone to school (uphill, both ways, in the snow). We stashed our violins in our lockers before lunch. We'd practice every afternoon or evening when we'd rather be out with our friends. Most of all, we learned discipline, working as team, commitment and fractions (you can't play a waltz if you don't understand 3/4 time!)

Why are we telling you this? Well, budget cuts are forcing the Napa Valley Unified School District to make some hard choices. The Napa Valley Education Foundation (NVEF) wants to make sure that music survives the chopping block. They're conducting a campaign to raise funds to ensure that over 1,300 school-aged children can continue to participate in school music programs.

So, why is this important? Studies have shown that students involved in music programs have a higher level of self-esteem, which is the main predictor of resilience to substance abuse and other negative behaviors. Music programs teach and engage students so they are more successful in learning other subjects.

Here's how you can help - consider making a donation of any amount to the Napa Valley Education Foundation on behalf of the "Campaign to Sustain Music for our Children". This money will go directly to plug any holes in music program budgets.

The train will pull out of the station at 6:30 pm

Let's face it - not everyone gets into football - especially when the local teams aren't playing. Instead of feigning interest, why not go some place where the mention of "football" or "the Super Bowl" are actually frowned upon.

So, join us again this year at Bounty Hunter Wine Bar & Smokin' BBQ (975 First Street in Napa) for the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar's "What Super Bowl? Party II" on Sunday, February 6.

We'll kick-off our celebration at 3:00 pm (35 minutes before the scheduled kick-off Super Bowl XLV in Cowboys Stadium).

Fabulous Friday Afternoon at the Movies

Here's a mission for those troops that have a bit of time available during the afternoon. We're going to the movies!

Our friends at the Cameo Cinema (1340 Main Street in St. Helena) are showing "I Love You Phillip Morris" on Friday, January 28 at 2:30 pm . . . and we're going to be there!

The film is based on the 1980's and 1990's real-life story of con artist, impostor and multiple prison escapee Steven Jay Russell (played by Jim Carrey). While incarcerated, Russell falls in love with his fellow inmate, Phillip Morris (played by Ewan McGregor). After Morris is released from prison, Russell escapes from prison four times in order to be reunited with Morris.

Start the New Year Off Right

It's hard to believe that 2010 is almost over. It's been a great year for the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar!

We've had over 40 missions during the year and supported lots of great businesses and non-profit organizations . . . and we couldn't have done it without a loyal and dedicated platoon of troops (that's YOU!)

We don't have any missions planned for New Years Eve but that doesn't mean there's nothing going on.

Shortly after being "deployed" to the Napa Valley, your Mission Commander discovered a remarkable source of intelligence - Paul Franson's "NapaLife". Paul investigates what's going on in the Napa Valley and distributes it each Monday morning via his newsletter. The idea for many of our missions during the past two years came from the pages of NapaLife. I guess that makes Paul the honorary Intelligence Officer of the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar!

We'll be enjoying an evening with Lucky Penny Productions' Taylor Bartolucci and Barry Martin with Andrew Moore on the piano for favorites from Broadway musicals. You'll be able to wet your whistle with a beverage and join in the singing or grab the spotlight for a solo - or just sit back and enjoy the show. It promises to be an evening sure to blow away your winter blues.

This is a "one-night only" event and the admission is free!

The fun runs from 7 until 10 pm. No reservations are needed - just drop in whenever you can.

Double Axels, Salchows and Lutzes, Oh My!

Join the troops from the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar when we invade the Yountville Holiday Skating Park at V Marketplace (6525 Washington Street in Yountville, of course) on Sunday, December 26 (that's Boxing Day to you folks from Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom) from 3 to 9 pm.

We'll enjoy "skating under the stars, with a clear-top tent" protecting us from the elements. Vintage Estate Private Dining will be on hand to provide a menu of sweet, savory, hot and cold offerings. Beverages will include hot chocolate, apple cider, wine and beer. And starting at 6 pm you'll be able to warm up with Hot Toddies and a festive holiday cocktail menu.

It's just $12 for a pair of rental skates and ice time (kids 12 and under skate for just $8).

Due To Circumstances Beyond Our Control . . .

Well, we tried but just couldn’t pull it all together. As a result, we’re POSTPONING the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar holiday dance party and fundraiser.

We had originally planned to hold the event on Sunday, December 19. Unfortunately, plan after plan kept falling through:

the first venue was too small
the second was too expensive
the third venue never bothered to return our calls
the fourth venue didn’t have an ABC license (and what’s a Napa Guerilla Gay Bar event without a bar?)
the fifth venue was too busy
by the time we’d found the sixth venue we had run out of time

So, we took it as a sign that now was not the time.

You’ll be the first ones to know when we reschedule the event.

Join the Napa Valley Unity League at our annual Holiday Party Extravaganza on Monday, December 6 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm at Riverpointe Resort (500 Lincoln Avenue in Napa - FIRST floor of the Clubhouse Building)

So, here’s the story . . .

We had planned to have a great big Italian feast at the Napa Valley Unity League’s annual Holiday Party, just like last year. When we contacted the restaurant we found out that they were closed on December 6. We were disappointed but we’ve never let our disappointment get the better of us. The situation called for creativity . . . and boy, did we get creative!

We thought – hey, remember in the movie “A Christmas Story” when the Bumpus’ hounds invade the Parker’s house and devour “the old man’s” turkey? They didn’t let a little catastrophe ruin their holiday! They all got dressed, jumped in the car and headed out for Chinese food.

And then we thought – hey, why can’t we do the same?

Join us on Monday, December 6 for a Chinese meal, beverages (including delicious wine from Stonehedge Winery) and festive holiday fun! We’ll gather for drinks starting at 6:00 pm. Dinner will be served at 7:00.

And what does all this cost? Just one $10 gift card from either Target or Wal-Mart.

The gift cards will be donated to V.O.I.C.E.S. – a local organization that “unites transitioning foster youth, social service agencies, educational institutions and committed community members to help young people become independent adults and engaged citizens.” The gift cards will be used as holiday presents for their clients. What else? For every $10 gift card (or $10 in cash) that you donate you’ll receive one raffle ticket for a chance at some fabulous prizes.

It's a first . . . the first Napa Guerilla Gay Bar potluck! It all takes place on Saturday, November 20 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm at the Toolbox Wine Company tasting room (1021 McKinstry Street in Napa - just across from the Oxbow Public Market).

It will be a great opportunity for troops to get together before all the holiday craziness begins and enjoy friends, both old and new . . . and those that are gifted in the KP (Kitchen Patrol) arts will be able to show us what they can do. Not so gifted? You can always stop by a local grocery store, bakery, cafe or charcuterie and pick something up.

At the event you'll meet the "Fierce Female Founders" of Toolbox Wine Company and enjoy their newly released wines for just $6 a glass. They'll also be offering one-night-only specials to the troops on purchases.

Get ready for the Napa Valley AIDS Walk and raise funds at the same time as the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar invades Grano at the Depot (806 Fourth Street at Soscol in Napa) on Friday, October 29 for some carbohydrate loading, great food and wines and fabulous company. Grano is open from 5 to 10 pm.

Want something to whet your appetite? Your Mission Commander's favorite dish at Grano is Spaghetti Chitarra. They take fresh, house-made pasta, cook it perfectly and then place it in a bowl made from a giant wheel of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. The warm pasta, Shiitake mushrooms, garlic and olive oil pick up all kinds of goodness while the pasta is tossed with tongs in the cheese bowl. So good!

Following the Napa Valley AIDS Walk on Saturday, October 30 you'll probably be looking for a Halloween party to attend. Since you'll already be in costume, why not head over the hill to Sonoma?

Our friends at Sonoma GayDar, a "casual, social networking group whose purpose is to bring the local LGBT community (and friends of) together for a fun, casual time with old and new friends" are sponsoring their Halloween Bash 2010 - "To The Cave BatBoyz and BatGirlz!"

It will be a costume bash and dance in the cave at the Deerfield Ranch Winery (10200 Sonoma Highway in Kenwood) on Saturday, October 30 from 7 to 11 pm. Tickets are $25 and includes light hors d'oeuvres. Wines will be available to purchase by the glass or bottle.

According to the group, you can expect "a fabulous party with fabulous people dressed in fabulous costumes."

Between ticket sales and a collection from the audience at the end of the performance of Rent we raised $365.11 for the Napa Valley AIDS Walk.
Thanks to the generosity of Rose and the entire crew at Panchas as well as those who "braved" the rain and attended the Beer Bust we raised another $524.99

Don't miss a minute of the two Napa Guerilla Gay Bar events this weekend!

First, join us for an evening of entertainment as we invade the Lincoln Theater in Yountville on Saturday evening, October 16 for a live performance of the rock musical, Rent. If you buy your tickets from the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar organization, at least $10 per ticket will be donated to the Napa Valley AIDS Walk. Look for the PayPal link at the top of the right-hand column of the our website (www.napagaybar.com). The show starts at 8 pm with a VIP lounge especially for troops and friends of the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar before the perfomance and during intermission.

They're having an "Eat to Defeat Domestic Violence" event at Ristorante Allegria (1026 First Street in downtown Napa) all day on Thursday, October 7. Eat lunch or dinner at Allegria on that day and a portion of your check will be donated to NEWS.

Once again, it's B-R Day (Breakfast in Rutherford Day)!

Earlier this year a large contingent from the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar invaded the Rutherford Grange Ranch-Style Breakfast. It was a blast! This time promises to be even better.

Here's the deal - on Sunday, September 19 from 8:30 to 11:30 am the folks at the Grange will be serving up Scrambled Eggs, Pancakes, Bacon, Sausage, Home-fried Potatoes, OJ, Coffee and Tea.

The charge? $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for kids and $15.00 for entire families. (and just a reminder from last year - when asked what the Grange considered a "family" they replied - "Anyone is welcome at the Grange. If someone is a family they are a family - no qualifiers")

This time your Mission Commander, having already receive the approval of the folks from the Grange, will be bringing some complementary "bubbles" to add to our OJ in order to make Mimosas. He may even make up a batch of his famous Bloody Marys!

First Annual Napa Valley BBQ Battle

Previous Napa Guerilla Gay Bar missions have proved that the troops love their BBQ. They also love helping their community.

Well, here's a two-fer! Chef Brian Whitmer from the Napa Valley Marriott has personally invited us to the 1st Annual Napa Valley Barbeque Battle.

It all takes place on Sunday, October 3 at the Napa Valley Marriott. Hosted by Judd’s Hill Winery and Napa Valley Marriott Hotel & Spa, this barbeque cook-off will benefit the Napa Valley Education Foundation’s Music Connection Program. Music Connection has been equipping student musicians with quality musical instruments to begin their musical journeys in the Napa Valley Unified School District (NVUSD) for more than 12 years.

On October 3rd from 1 to 4 pm guests will be spoiled with great wine, food and entertainment. Highlights of the event include:

opening reception featuring Judd’s Hill’s delicious current release Sauvignon Blanc and Rose paired with BBQ Oysters from Tomales Bay Oyster Co.

The Battle features two highly regarded barbeque enthusiasts:

Pat Burke, Hospitality Director at Judd’s Hill Winery, is a recognized award winning barbeque competitor and a member of the famous “Barnyard Roasters” BBQ Team and team captain of “The Vineyard Roasters”, who took 1st Prize in the Rib category at the 2006 West Coast BBQ Championships.

This will definitely be a battle for the ages!

I LOVE the musical RENT! I was absolutely blown away when I first saw it in the late 1990's on Broadway.

The musical is loosely based on Puccini's opera La Bohème and tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.

The most recognized song from Rent is "Seasons of Love". Here's it is from the last performance on Broadway:

Well, we're in luck! Rent - the Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning musical is coming to the Lincoln Theater in Yountville on October 16 and 17.

I've managed to score a great deal on a block of 20 tickets for the Saturday evening, October 16 production. The seats are smack-dab in the middle of rows F, G and H - absolutely great seats.

Today is the day! Judge Vaughn Walker will release his decision on the constitutionality of Prop 8 sometime between 1 and 3 this afternoon.

Towleroad guest blogger Ari Ezra Waldman says "August 4, 2010 will be a momentous day in the history of LGBT law. Today’s decision will mark the first time a federal district court has ruled explicitly on the constitutionality of a voter-approved initiative that withdrew marriage equality rights from millions of Californians. It will tell the story of why millions of dollars were spent to prevent committed gay couples from marrying and whether that story merits legal legitimacy. It will also set the stage for the upcoming legal battles at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court."

If you ask a couple of your Mission Commander's friends (and you know who you are!) you'll most likely hear the following: "delicious, pipping hot corn on the cob, slathered with butter and served by hunky firefighters". I guess that's pretty much how we roll!

Join the troops from the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar as we invade the Napa Town & Country Fair (on the grounds of the Napa Valley Expo at 575 Third Street in Napa) on Wednesday, August 11 for OPENING DAY!

We'll eat (of course), we'll drink (naturally), we'll visit the exhibits, we'll all hold our noses as we look at the livestock, we'll ride the rides in the carnival area (or watch as others scream and cry like little kids).

Then, at 8 p.m. we'll meet up at the brand new amphitheatre for a concert by jazz pianist David Benoit (pronounced, believe it or not, BEN-wah). Those who saw him perform with Dave Koz at the Robert Mondavi Summer Concert Series know how good this guy is! What could be better? We've had two outstanding events at the pool - this year's "Ibiza Chill-Out in the Napa Valley" during Napa Valley Pride 2010 and last year's Napa Valley Pride Kick-off. We knew it was just a matter of time before other organizations would discover everything that Bardessono has to offer!.

Well, get ready to Get Wet for Equality as Equality California and Instinct Magazine present a private pool party to support the inaugural "Swim for Equality".

The event will feature hors d'oeuvres hosted by Bardessono, and an open bar from 5 to 7 p.m. hosted by Blue Angel Vodka. There will also be a fashion show and giveaways.

Post-Film Mission to Cuvee

Did you know that the very first "Harvey Milk Day" will be celebrated in the state of California this month?

In celebration, a number of local organizations got together and arranged for a special screening in Napa of a brand-new documentary.

The film, "On These Shoulders We Stand" by Glenne McElhinney, "chronicles the lives of eleven elders, from their early years to their coming out, to their groundbreaking activism for the rights of all LGBT people. Contrary to popular belief that the struggle for gay rights was confined to New York City and San Francisco, the film profiles several Los Angeles activists who helped change the course of both California and LGBT history. The film shows postwar Los Angeles to be a city of startling contrasts. In this tale of two cities, there is one, a city with a substantial, vibrant gay community, and the other, a city obsessed with rendering that community invisible, kept in the closet or locked in its jails."

The film will be previewed on Friday, May 21, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church (625 Randolph Street in Napa) starting at 7 p.m.

Following the film and a Q&A session with the director, the troops of the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar will head over to Cuvee Restaurant (1650 Soscol Avenue) for a bite to eat and something to drink. The warm and friendly atmosphere of Cuvee will be the perfect place to discuss the film or just catch up with friends.

The proceeds from this event will be donated to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life on behalf of the team from the Napa Valley Unity League. It was one of the most talked-about events in Napa Valley last year. It was glamorous! It was fabulous! It was the Twilight T-Dance that took place during Napa Valley Pride 2009!

This year Out in the Vineyard is "taking the show on the road" to Sonoma County. They are pleased to present "Twilight T-Dance - An Evening of Wine & Dancing".

The event takes place on Saturday, June 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Atwood Ranch in Glen Ellen (it's about the same distance from the intersection of Highways 29 and 121 as Beringer Vineyards in St. Helena - the site of last year's event).

Once again, Napa's own DJ Rotten Robbie will provide music for your listening and dancing enjoyment.

A portion of the proceeds and the silent auction benefit Face to Face Sonoma County AIDS Network.

VIP tickets include wine tasting, access to a VIP lounge and an invitation to a SKYY Vodka reception starting at 4:30 p.m. VIP tickets are $100 in advance, $125 after May 25.

New Tech High School Dine and Donate Events

The troops of the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar love to have fun - but they also love to take care of their community. As a result, we wanted to let you know about a handful of fundraisers that benefit a great program here in the Napa Valley.

The mission of New Technology High School is to "prepare students to excel in an information-based, technologically advanced society." This groundbreaking program achieves this through encouraging "students to learn through collaboration with family, business and community. Students develop the resilience necessary to succeed in a rapidly changing world. Their education at NTHS prepares them for lifelong learning, citizenship, and personal growth." They learn in an "innovative and professional environment fostered by the use of advanced learning methods and technology."

It's a great program and deserves our support!

They've set up a slew of "Dine and Donate" events. Please consider supporting the school by going out to eat at the participating merchants AND BRINGING THE APPROPRIATE FLYER (the school doesn't get credit or the donation if you don't submit the flyer when you pay your bill).

Napa Valley Pride 2010 is ON IT'S WAY!

Napa Valley LGBT Pride 2010 is scheduled to run from Saturday, June 12 all the way through Sunday, June 20. By the looks of things it could be the best celebration EVER!

In case you were wondering - the troops of the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar will be called-up and mobilized several times during the nine-day celebration. The folks at HQ are currently gathering intelligence and developing the battle plan.

We want to make sure that our FINGERPRINT - our fabulous sense of fun and support - are included in as many events as possible this year. The best way for that to happen is for as many of you to get involved.

And the best way to get involved is to attend a planning meeting. The next meeting is on Tuesday, April 13 at Stonehedge Winery Tasting Room (1004 Clinton Street in Napa) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Your Mission Commander hopes to see many members of our battalion there!

It seems like just a year ago we helped The Valley's Other Fruit (the local blog for all-things LGBTQQIA) celebrate their first "Blogoversary". Well, come to think of it - it has been a year). Well, now we've all been invited to invade The Fruit's 2nd Anniversary Wing-Ding!

It all takes place on Thursday, April 8, but let's get the word from the Chief Fruit himself:

"Better late than never with planning, right? The Valley's Other Fruit will be celebrating two years of fruity info sharing next week with our 2nd Blogoversary! What better place to kick off the festivities than at Gott's Roadside (formerly Taylor's Refresher) at the Oxbow Public Market - 644 First Street in Napa, where we've already spent so many wonderful local's nights, pride and more?

It's the once-a-month event that takes over Main Street in downtown St. Helena. On the first Friday of each month (between May and October) the stores, galleries and restaurants stay open late. Each storefront hosts a different Napa Valley winery. There's entertainment throughout the downtown corridor. People mix and mingle. It was a HUGE hit in it's inaugural season last year with over 15,000 people attending. It's a blast!

So, why not join the ground troops from the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar on Friday, May 7 when we invade Cheers! St. Helena during their first event of the 2010 season. Things get started at 6 p.m. and last until 9.

We're going to try to take a bit of the sting out of the process this year. Your friends at the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar have called for a mission the day before your tax return is due.

We're going to descend upon Zinsvalley Restaurant (1106 First Street in Downtown Napa) on Wednesday, April 14 when they celebrate "Happy Hour" all evening long!

Our One Year Anniversary!

It's hard to believe but it was one year ago today that the troops from the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar went of their very first mission!

And it's been an absolutely amazing year:

We've conducted 18 maneuvers (you can see a complete list on the right-hand margin of our website).
More than 200 folks have been "recruited" to join our Facebook group
"Team Guerilla" raised over $6,000 for AIDS Walk Napa Valley - and won the coveted "Number One Team" award
"Rockin' Around - A Holiday Party" raised over $2,250 for the Napa Valley Food Bank & Napa Valley Shelter Program.
More than 70 folks of all ages had a ball when we invaded Napa Bowl
We visited Rose at Panchas of Yountville several times. She "won our hearts and minds" when during our first visit she turned down the jukebox, got up on the bar and thanked us for coming and told us that we were "always welcome" in her place!

It's breakfast and gambling all in one place - and it's not a casino!

Join the troops from the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar on Saturday, March 27 when we once again invade Compadres Rio Grille (505 Lincoln Avenue in Napa) from 9 to 11 a.m. This time - breakfast and, if you choose, eye-opening cocktails!

So, here's the deal. Compadres is running a special during the weekend mornings during March to promote their breakfast/bunch menu. Here's how it works:

You enjoy a traditional American or Mexican breakfast, or any one the their very own "special creative dishes"
They'll flip a coin - you "call it"

Join us on Saturday, March 13th when Silo's Jazz Club presents Kellie Fuller and Mike Greensill perform popular classics from the likes of Burt Bacharach, Karen Carpenter, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, Dusty Springfield, Michael Jackson and more. Kellie and Mike will be performing two sets - the first starting at 8 p.m., the second begins at 9:45 p.m.

Mmmmm, Breakfast!

There's only one thing better than a good old-fashion breakfast . . . an INEXPENSIVE old-fashioned breakfast!

Join the troops from the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar when they invade the Rutherford Grange Hall (8550 St. Helena Hwy in Rutherford - just south of the Rutherford Grill) on Saturday, March 13 anytime from 7 to 11:30 a.m. for a Ranch-Style Breakfast.

The "all-inclusive" breakfast includes "silver dollar pancakes, delicious fresh sausage & bacon, homestyle potatoes, free range eggs, coffe, tea and juice". The price? Just $5 for adults and $3 for kids. They're also offering a family rate of $15. What qualifies as a family? When your Mission Commander asked the folks at the Rutherford Grange this question here is what they said:

"Anyone is welcome at the Grange. If someone is a family, they are a family, no qualifiers . . ."

We like that attitude!

Funds from the breakfast support the Grange's mission to "provide community programs (that) serve all the people of Napa County. Their projects include:
A collaborative Meal Program and Healthful Eating Series where Chefs provide Live Preparation Demonstrations to the Public.
A Children's Chorus encompassing ages 8-18 to enhance children's lives through music and diversity.
A Lecture Series for the general public. Topics include: a Vintner Series, Solar Power, Wind Power, Water Conservation & Collection, Sustainable Living and Community Gardens/Gardening.
An avenue of combined low interest loans to make renewable energy and water collection a reality for the families of Napa County.
An Art, Performing Arts and Music Program for the Children of Napa County at the Grange Hall. Many parents and new members long for a program to replace the dwindling arts and music programs within the public and private schools of Napa County.

Mark Friday, February 26 on your calendar. Join us for "Sushi Friday" at The Centre Cafe at the Made in Napa Valley Culinary Centre (388 Devlin Road in Napa) from 4 to 7 p.m. Shiso Catering and our ~~good~~ great friends at Kinyon Culinary Services are putting together an "all you can eat" sushi bar for only $20.

In addition to having some "kick-ass" sake available they're waiving corkage for the evening. Feel free to bring your own bottle of wine. If you've never tried sushi before here's a great chance. Also keep in mind - not all sushi is "raw" fish. Come on - give it a try!

A little too early for you? We've been told by a very reliable source that they're "not going to shut the door or close the bar at 7:00". Just get there when you can!

Joint Maneuvers with Sonoma GayDar

Troops from the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar will "go west" and join forces with the folks from the Sonoma GayDar organization for joint maneuvers on Sunday, February 21. We'll be conducting these activities at Nicholson Ranch Winery (4200 Napa Road in Sonoma) from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Nicholson Ranch is the first winery you see after you've crossed into Sonoma county on Highway 121.

The Sonoma GayDar organization's mission is to "bring the local LGBT community (and friends of) together for a fun, casual time with old and new friends." That sounds right up our alley!

Wine will be available for purchase by the glass . . . great folks and camaraderie included at no extra charge!

A Film and Fun in St. Helena

Join us on Saturday, February 20, 2010 when troops from the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar journey north to the lovely town of St. Helena, California.

Once there we will indulge ourselves as follows:

First, we'll attend the 2:30 p.m. matinee of "A Single Man" at the Cameo Cinema (1340 Main Street in St. Helena). Set in Los Angeles in 1962 at the height of the Cuban Missle Crisis, it's the story of George Falconer, a 52-year old British college professor (played by Colin Firth) struggling to find meaning to his life after the death of his long time partner, Jim (Matthew Goode). The film also stars Julianne Moore, was directed by Tom Ford and is based on the novel by Christopher Isherwood. It's receiving a lot of Oscar buzz.
Next, we'll head over to Ana's Cantina (1205 Main Street in St. Helena) for "après ciné" cocktails, music, pool and a discussion of the film.
Finally, we'll attempt to agree on a dinner venue or we'll hang out at Ana's until the live music starts.

The "What Superbowl?" Party

Let's face it - not everyone is "into" football. And even if you are a football fan you might lose interest once your favorite team is out of the playoffs.

So, let's have a "What Superbowl?" party! We'll go to a television-free locale and enjoy ourselves.

Here's the mission - we'll start assembling at the Bounty Hunter Wine Bar & Smokin' BBQ (975 First Street in Napa) starting at 2 p.m. (one hour before kick-off) on Sunday, February 7.

The Bounty Hunter has 40 wines by the glass and over 400 wines by the bottle. They also serve Guiness on tap and a selection of beer by the bottle. And don't forget about their terrific food menu - including great bar appetizers and their amazing "Beer Can Chicken" that looks so good that I have to include a picture.

And for a little fun(d) - anyone caught saying "Football" or "Superbowl" during this mission will be "ordered" to put one dollar in a specially-designed bucket. Proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross for Haitian Earthquake Relief.

Dog Tired on Christmas Evening? This Will Perk You Up!

Sometimes we can do too much leading up to Christmas. Between shopping, baking, wrapping, attending holiday parties (like the amazing "Rockin' Around"), visiting family, eating (and drinking) too much and such, we are usually exhausted on the evening of December 25.

Well - perk up! Stop by Starbucks for a Gingerbread Latte or Peppermint Mocha then join the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar when we hold Christmas maneuvers on Friday December 25, 2009 at Bank Café and Bar in the lobby of The Westin Verasa (1314 McKinstry in Napa) starting at 7 p.m.

One more note - this event will have limited publicity. There will be no e-mail blast. We'll be doing this occasionally to encourage troops to follow us via one of the following methods:

Rockin' Around Raises $2253.80!

You guys ROCK!

Yesterday we raised $2,253.80 to help the hungry and homeless in Napa County! That means that we'll be issuing checks to both the Napa Valley Food Bank and the Napa Valley Shelter Program in the amount of $1,126.90. Whoo-Hoo!

Special thanks to:

Kinyon Gordon and the folks at Kinyon! Culinary Services and The Centre Cafe at the Made in Napa Valley Culinary Center. Leilani was absolutely amazing.
DJ Rotten Robbie - the man sure knows how to "pump up the volume" so we can "dance, dance, dance"!
The volunteers - Rob Meason, Renee Babcock, Juli Sanchez, Tom Roberts, Josie Jenkins, Janice Morrish, Robbie Hayes, Jim Estep, Randy Martinsen, Annie "the" Baker, TJ Danser, Jorge Contreras and Eric Oesterle.
The wineries and tasting rooms that donated wine that was served at the event and sold at the silent auction. Thanks to White Cottage Vineyard, Herb Lamb Vineyard, Napa Valley Wine Train Wine Store, Beringer Vineyards, Silverado Trail Wine Studio (Bighorn Cellars, Expression and Tetra), Ascentia Wine Estates (Gary Farrell, Buena Vista Carneros, Geyser Peak and Atlas Peak Winery) and, of course, Poem Cellars.
Everyone who attended! I think it's safe to say that "a good time was had by all"!

your bids in the Silent Auction raised more than $500
your song requests to the "Human Jukebox" raised over $400
you tossed more than $100 into the "Friends don't let friends dance with change in their pockets" donation buckets
local businesses made more than $4,100 of "in-kind" donations (food, wine, space rental) in support of the event

Again, thank you for your support of the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar and your community. There will be folks this holiday season with a roof over their heads and food in their bellies because of you!

Rockin' Around* - a Holiday Party

Celebrate the holidays (all of them) with the Napa Guerilla Gay Bar!

UPDATE: Discounted advance tickets are no longer available. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door. See you there!

It all takes place Sunday, December 20 from 3:00 to 8:00 pm at The Centre Café at the Made in Napa Valley Culinary Centre (388 Devlin Road in Napa).

DJ Rotten Robbie will be spinning for your listening and dancing enjoyment. Festive fare will be prepared and presented by Kinyon! Culinary Catering and The Centre Café. Think of it as eat/drink/dance/walk! with mistletoe!

Net proceeds from this event will be split between two very worthy local causes:

50% will be donated to the Napa Valley Shelter Project – an organization that provides “safe and humane temporary shelter to Napa County homeless individuals and families and coordinates resources to assist them in acquiring the skills and assets necessary to obtain and maintain permanent housing and self-sufficiency”.
50% will be donated to the Napa Valley Food Bank which “assists people to become (or remain) self-sufficient by lessening the stress of meeting their basic need for food. (They) provide food to low-income individuals, families, seniors and to other organizations serving those less fortunate through unique partnerships that maximize the foodstuffs (they) are able to supply to Napa County’s low-income people.”

Once again, The Human Jukebox will be available to play your requests. For $1, your song will be added to DJ Rotten Robbie’s mix – $5 (or more) bumps your request to the top of the list. 100% of these funds will go to the beneficiaries of this event.

VIP tickets will feature access to a dessert bar known as “Kinyon’s Chocolate Wonderland”. Tickets purchased on line after December 15 and at the door are $30 for general admission and $35 for VIP.

This event, like all Napa Guerilla Gay Bar events, is for EVERYONE! It doesn’t matter if you’re gay or straight, male or female, single or coupled, owner of a cat or a dog, a Raider fan or a 49-er fan, wearer of boxer or briefs, a coffee or tea or Coke or Pepsi drinker. EVERYONE is welcome – just be 21 years of age or older.
